Last time we took a closer look at Dell’s best selling convertible laptop the Inspiron 13-7000. It is a 2016 model and it still currently sells in Dell’s retail stores and online. Another compact computer reviewed by us was a beautiful Lenovo Yoga 900 that is a laptop/tablet hybrid. Both laptops have 6th generation Intel processors, touchscreens and ultra light bodies.

Today our focus is on a Toshiba Satellite P875-S7102, that is very different from the ultra portable laptops. A 17-inch display and a heavy chassis make the laptop perfect for stationary use rather than on-the-go. If you don’t need the portability and expect high performance for reasonable price this laptop is for you.

Boasting FHD 17” display and Intel® Core i7 processor, this Toshiba is a good workstation offering much in a way of a desktop replacement.

Display

The FHD TruBrite 17.3” has 1920×1080 resolution that offers a bright picture with vibrant colors and decent viewing angles. Unfortunately, due to the glossy finish, the screen is reflective and more enjoyable to use in a darker environment.

Performance

The Toshiba P875 has four RAM slots allowing expansion to 32GB of memory with four 8GB modules. That is a very important factor for everyone who’s seeking to max out memory in the laptop. Two slots are found under the memory cover door on the bottom of the laptop. Two more slots may be accessed by pulling the keyboard up. The Intel® Core i7-3630QM without dedicated graphics card will handle light gaming as well as image and video editing, and other mild duty tasks effortlessly.

Considering the laptop’s age, it would best serve for entertainment with the large screen and very good speakers. For that purpose Toshiba installed Intel Wireless Display technology that allows you to watch the laptop’s content on HDTV wirelessly via TV adapter. Toshiba has used this technology before in Qosmio line of laptops.

Two hard drive bays are a very nice feature. One can be used for a smaller Solid State Drive (SSD) for storing Windows. That will speed operations up a lot without the cost of a large SSD. All other data can be stored on a large sata hard drive.

Design

Due to weight and size, the Toshiba P875 may be compared to Dell Inspiron 17 5755 laptop that we presented on our blog last February. If you consider that Toshiba was originally introduced in 2013, it doesn’t really look older than Dell. The case is made of aluminum with a nice silver finish. It looks aesthetic even now compared with a newly designed laptop, yet the thickness gives away its age. Weighing 6.6 lbs puts it in a heavy class and carrying it around in a case with a strap over your shoulder will be painful after a while.

This laptop is not recommended for frequent travelers. On the other hand, thanks to the size, this Toshiba features a total of four USB 3.0, HDMI and VGA ports. It also has audio and mic jacks, ethernet port and a SD card slot. The left side also houses the optical drive that reads and burns DVDs.

Battery

Not the best battery life also underlines the stationary aspect of the computer. Depending on use, the 6-cell 48WHr lithium-ion battery lasts up to 4 hours. That’s not a surprise for that generation of laptops with big displays and Core i7 processors.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is large and smooth and allows for comfortable typing for a long time. A full-size numeric pad adds to the convenience. The touchpad is located too close to the keyboard and without a lock may cause errors when touched unintentionally during typing, but once you get used to it, you will not notice it anymore.

Specifications:
  • 2.4GHz Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor

  • 8GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 32GB)

  • 750GB HDD (5400rpm) (additional bay)

  • 17.3-inch FHD TruBrite Display (1920×1080)

  • Windows 8 (64-bit)

  • DVD-SuperMulti drive

Conclusion

In conclusion this laptop offers a solid performance packed in a stylish body. It sells on used laptop market like eBay for about $300. For that price there are many other choices of laptops to buy so do your research online to find a perfect computer for you.
